For most people, having an emergency kit in your car is one of those things you think about from time to time—and then promptly forget. We all have those “you know, I really should…” type thoughts…

car emergency tips

But…you really should keep an emergency kit in your car. You can buy one that is prepackaged, they are easy to find online, or you can put one together yourself. It’s as simple as finding a box or duffel bag of some kind, and making sure it has the following essentials:

1. A fully charged phone AND a charger…

While most people have their cell phone with them at all times, it doesn’t always mean it’s fully charged. In fact, Murphy’s Law proves to us that an emergency probably means your phone isn’t charged. But make it a point to always have your phone with you when you get in the car as well as a charger. 2. Triangle reflectors and flares

Many experts recommend having at least three of each of these items. Why? If you happen to get into an accident or break down, this can prevent further catastrophe by providing you with more space to alert oncoming drivers and traffic that you are pulled over. Having just one reflector or flare is great, but it may be too late to prevent another accident if an oncoming driver doesn’t see you.

3. Bottled water and non-perishable food

If your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, you don’t want to add dehydration to the list of problems. And in the event that you need to walk a distance for help or assistance, it is best to have a little something to eat to keep your energy levels up. Protein bars are a great item to keep in your emergency kit. You can also keep fruit cups, tuna kits, granola bars, or easy open canned soup if you would like.

4. Blankets

Even if you don’t live in an area that is known for freezing temperatures, being stuck in your car for several hours might get a little chilly, especially if you are stuck in your vehicle after the sun goes down or in the middle of the night. Pack appropriately based on the weather or climate. But, at a minimum, pack a light blanket.

5. A flashlight and batteries

Unfortunately, there’s never a “good time” to be in an accident or break down. If you find yourself broken down on the side of the road at night, this will be one item you will be happy to have on hand. Even if you have an accident or breakdown during the day, it can be difficult to see things under the hood, or under the car itself without a flashlight.

While most cell phones come with a flashlight app, you should save your phone battery for making emergency calls, so having a flashlight can be a huge help.

6. Extra fluids for you vehicle

Just like people need to stay hydrated, so does your vehicle! A break down might be due to low fluids, which is something you can fix yourself by keeping a few simple items on hand.

  • A few quarts of oil
  • Antifreeze
  • Brake fluid
  • Windshield wiper fluid

Keeping these pertinent items on hand may save you the hassle of even having to call for help.

7. Jumper cables

This one may seem like a no-brainer, but many people do not carry jumper cables in their vehicles. This will not only be to your benefit, but you may be able to provide a helping hand to another driver in need. Be sure you also know how to use them.

8. A utility tool

Something like a Swiss army knife would be perfect. You do not necessarily need an entire tool kit, but a utility tool can be a huge help in the event of an emergency.

If you purchase a prepackaged kit, be sure to look it over to make sure it has these items before throwing it in your trunk. And once you have your car’s emergency kit packed and ready to go, don’t forget about it! Be sure you go through it on occasion to make sure it still has all these essential items. Things like batteries and non-perishable food items aren’t made to last forever.

Hopefully you never need to use your car emergency kit, but it will certainly be time and money well spent if you find yourself in a situation where you do need it. Safe travels!
